Description

This is a copy of two related letters. The copy was made by Henry Beard and sent to Rev. Robert Atkinson (see OU RG73.04.156). The first letter was written by Beard and sent to Columbus Delano who was Secretary of the Interior. Beard was the attorney for the Treasurer and trustees of Ottawa University. The letter expresses the concern the treasurer has about the constitutionality of the law which was passed and is called An Act for the relief of certain Indians in the Central Superintendency. Beard requests that Mr. Delano refer the law to the U.S. Attorney General to determine its constitutionality. The second letter is Mr. Delano's reply saying he will execute the law and will not be referring it to the Attorney General. The original letter from Delano is OU RG73.04.166.
