Description

Newspaper article by John Mark Lambertson and originally published in The Ottawa Herald June 18, 1987. Lambertson explains that the date is significant because that date in 1837 is when the Rev. Jotham and Eleanor Meeker arrived in Franklin County, thus becoming the first permanent white settlers. Article describes what the country was like and where the mission was likely located on the north bank of the Marais des Cygnes River.
Newspaper article includes five photos: Eleanor and Jotham Meeker and their three daughters Maria Meeker Simpson, Emma Meeker Byram and Eliza Meeker Keith as adults.
