Payne’s Health Institute was established in Ottawa in January, 1897, and Payne’s School of Osteopathy and Optics was chartered under the Kansas state law last September. This school is the outgrowth of a demand for more Osteopaths to carry on the work begun by Dr. O. C. Payne, and is thorough and complete in every particular. This school has a large number of pupils and has been very successful in its operation. We shall not enter into an extended disquisition of what Osteopathy is, but a few ideas may not be out of place. Osteopathy seeks out and if possible removes the cause of disease, and this in a manner absolutely harmless, which cannot always be said of drugs. It is an established fact that even those well skilled in medica materia have been unable to solve many of the simplest questions, and for that reason the science of Osteopathy has made the most wonderful strides among the sciences and in the treatment of disease. Osteopaths believe that man is an intricate machine and if the slightest part becomes deranged, other parts or organs may become impaired, and that the cause must be found and adjusted in order for proper motion of the whole machinery. Impaired parts are found by careful and correct diagnosis, and the graduate of this school must of necessity be a thorough anatomist and understand the structure and functions of every part of the human organism. Disease is abnormal – a deformity resulting from heredity, indiscretion or accident, and is cured through a reversal of the process by which it was generated. The officers of Payne’s School of Osteopathy and Optics are, Dr. O. C. Payne, president, and Mrs. Nellie Payne, secretary and treasurer. Dr. W. E. Payne is a valuable assistant and operator. The faculty are competent instructors, lecturers and demonstrators, and all the various branches are taught by the most practical demonstration. They make from 300 to 400 treatments per month, and they have effected many remarkable cures in Ottawa and surrounding cities, counties and states. All manner of diseases, both chronic and acute, which in their estimation can be cured, are successfully treated, and diseases that have not yielded to medical treatment have been treated with success and cured by them. Dr. O. C. Payne is a graduate of the Baxter Springs School of Osteopathy, graduating in 1896. The offices are located on West Third street, next door to the REPUBLICAN office.
