W. F. Houghton & Son conduct a variety stort [sic] at 204 South Main street, that is certainly a palace of beauty. Besides the immense stock of queen’s, glass and decorated ware, hundreds of articles of use and ornament adorn the counters and shelves. Large stocks of dolls, toys, books, stationery, curtains, willow ware, tinware, crockery, table cutlery, wall paper, novelties and notions are displayed in profusion. Among their lines of fancy decorated ware is one counter filled with fine souvenirs of Ottawa. This ware is made in Austria especially for Messrs Houghton & Son. Genuine medalions are exhibited that in design and beauty cannot be duplicated anywhere. They have also some novelties in picture frames and photo holders that are beauties. The 2, 5 and 10 cent counters present some attractive bargains. To attempt to describe the stock and many attractive features would require columns of space, which we have not at our command. Suffice to say, however, that this stock is equal to that of any retail house of the kind in Kansas. Mr. Houghton began a business career in Liverpool, England, at an early age, and his artistic taste and fine discrimination, together with his experience, have peculiarly fitted him for the lines in which he is engaged. Mr. Houghton began business in Ottawa in 1883, and has conducted the present establishment since 1887. This stock in this space cannot be described, but to be appreciated must be examined.
